Monitoring wells are specifically designed to monitor groundwater levels, quality and flow. They are typically constructed by drilling a borehole in the ground and installing a screened pipe at the bottom, which is surrounded by specific sand to allow water to flow into the pipe and a casing above with a Bentonite product surrounding the casing to prevent contamination, if any, from seeping in and isolates water tables. The casing is a protective pipe which prevents the hole from collapsing.
Monitoring wells are equipped with instruments, such as water level sensors or sampling devices. These wells are useful for environmental monitoring and resource management.
