Auger drilling is a method of drilling used for drilling boreholes to investigate soil stability and environmental assessments. It is often preferred because of its ability to penetrate most types of soil. It can also be a quick and cost effective method for shallow borehole drilling in soft to hard soil conditions.
Drilling with solid stem augers can be useful when drilling shallow to obtain split spoon samples with SPT's but can also create a stable, open borehole in the ground to install a monitoring well.
Hollow stem augers are more commonly used while drilling much deeper which can be quicker for sampling and insuring installation of monitoring wells are according to environmental regulations. Once the borehole is drilled, the monitoring well can be lowered to the bottom of the borehole and backfilled with appropriate sand and bentonite.
